    2. Minerva

      Minerva

Here is a lovely hoard of almost exclusively very large, mainly Roman Colonial and provincial coins. Hoards like this are extremely nice and very seldom come up, in fact it is only the second one I can remember us having in the last ten or so years. Many people prefer the earlier and larger coins to those of the more mixed hoards. It offers a rare but very interesting opportunity to acquire some early coins for cleaning and attributing. I think Minerva will offer a very fascinating look into the past and make for some great cleaning as a lot of them are already showing some nice detail. If you like cleaning larger and mainly Roman Colonial coins this is definitely the one for you.

I would imagine this hoard has some great prospecting opportunities along with good investment opportunities longer term. Around ten years ago there were a lot of the larger Roman uncleaned coins coming for sale, but as time passes, they get ever more difficult to find, and most dealers break them up and generally sell them individually, or in expensive counted lots. This is one of those “must have” hoards that five years down the line you will wish you had the opportunity to buy more of. We often get asked for Hoards like this, made up of almost exclusively larger Roman coins so don’t miss your opportunity to get a piece of it.

      Maia

This is one of the most varied Hoards that I have seen in quite some time, it has some noticeable Silver coins in there (mainly Islamic). A higher than average amount of early thicker Roman, and Greek coins. As well as a very pleasing amount of Seleucid and fractional Greeks by the looks of it.

There are some nice visible Widows mites in here, and a great mix of Byzantine and Roman coins. So all in all, a fantastically “varied hoard” with some great prospects to find some very interesting and rare coins. These highly varied hoards are always extremely popular; they offer a vast variety of coins from a major ancient trading region of the world. You really never know what kind of rare or interesting gems that you can find. Often these hoards contain coins with Zeus, Cleopatra, and other legendary figures in them. You know what they say “variety is the spice of life”. These are from a region renowned for some very rare, valuable, and interesting finds so they “ALWAYS” prove to be something a little different.

Here we have a hoard of large mainly Roman Provincial coins, I would say they are in slightly over average condition as a good deal of them you can feel the relief on prior to cleaning and a few of them already show good noticeable detail on them. A lot of these Provincial coins can be very collectable and offer some interesting cleaning, it should also be noted that a lot of these coins were often used in circulation until they were fairly worn.

This is a great hoard of around 90+% Ancient Classical Greek coins, with a sprinkle of Roman and Byzantine by the looks of it. Everyone loves Greek classical coins, they are so beautiful, collectable, valuable and generally far more sought after than most other coinage of the time. These are all real nice thick and chunky coins that will be extremely exciting to clean up. Although crusty enough to offer almost a complete surprise of what lies beneath you can see some beautiful classical detail on some of them with Gods, as well as Horses, Pegasus, Griffins, Poseidon, and great looking Eagles. This hoard offers extremely good prospecting opportunities to potentially uncover some rare and exciting coins after being cleaned. As a guess I would say that the majority of them are very early at around 2-300 BC. Also the few noticeable Roman coins in here seem to also be nice early examples generally. I am sure these will be a very rewarding investment of both time and money as you clean them, not to mention the history and mythology coming to life right in your hands. Typically these early coins tend to clean up very well, as the base metal was very high quality to start with.

These are absolutely beautiful mainly Roman silver coins. We were fortunate enough to be able to purchase this entire premium collection recently, and are very excited about being able to offer them for sale. As you can see the detail on them is generally excellent, and condition wise they all range from good to extremely fine. They came to us completely unattributed and we imagine that there will be some very exciting and valuable finds among them. They would be perfect for attribution and resale, or be a great addition to anyone’s coin collection or as future investment pieces. Most of them have been nicely cleaned, ordinarily we sell coins by weight, but we had to pay a lot of money for this collection so we will be selling them in unattributed lots. All of our coins come with complete satisfaction money back guarantee and a certificate of authenticity.

This 22KG is an absolutely wonderful Roman Hoard, it really does have everything in it that collectors or enthusiasts like. It is probably the best Roman hoard that we have ever had for a number of reasons. Firstly it has a lot of noticeable Roman Silver coins in it. While taking the photographs I would say that well over 40 of these silver coins were visible with a good few more that were completely Black that were also probably silver or silver. Also this hoard has a great balance between smaller and larger coins. As you can see from the pictures there is a lot of the very desirable larger Roman coins in here with a lot of them marked with "SC" on the reverse. There are some really nice sized "Roman Follis" I would say they are at least 20mm in size. In terms of cleaning, the balance here is perfect you have a lot of the coins already showing a bit of the intriguing detail yet crusty enough to keep you guessing at what you might find. They certainly don’t tend to come up like this very often it is one of those hoards that people will probably be talking to us about for several years as they continue to discover interesting and historical pieces. Another interesting point is that this hoard has virtually no hoard finds other than coins so it was certainly just a coin cache in ancient times. Altogether a great opportunity to have a lot of prospecting and attribution fun with this hoard.

    8. Levon Crusader Hoard

      Levon Crusader Hoard

This 3.1KG hoard is potentially the most important and interesting hoard that we have ever offered for sale. This hoard was originally assumed to be an Islamic mainly Silver and Bronze coins from the Middle Ages. However because of the levels of crust on the coins I cleaned a completely random sample of 19 coins to check they were in fact Silver and was absolutely gobsmacked by the results. When we purchased this hoard they were photographed in two lots (large coins and small ones) and we were told that they were “found in the same location”. Originally I misunderstood and assumed they were two different hoards found in close proximity to each other. But in fact I asked for clarification after a couple of the larger round coins were stuck to the small ones with exactly the same patina, and in fact it turns out they were in fact all found together in Jerusalem. I really don’t think you will ever see anything else quite like this come for sale from this period because of the coins in it.

These are absolutely beautiful premium grade Silver Denarius, they are all lovely coins without exception and all show fantastic amounts of detail. They came to us completely unattributed and we imagine that there will be some very exciting and valuable finds among them. They would be a great addition to anyone’s coin collection or as future investment pieces. Most of them have been nicely cleaned, ordinarily we sell coins by weight, but we will be selling these coins randomly chosen in lots of three. They will make lovely display pieces and offer the potential for retail sale after attribution.

If you are after nothing but very large Roman coins then this is the hoard for you! These hoards of larger Roman coins are getting very difficult to obtain these days and the prices of them have generally been moving steadily up as supply has wakened and demand has strengthened.

Here we have around 8Kg of almost exclusively large Roman coins. Detail wise they range from extremely crusty to some showing some good detail.

Interestingly enough on some of them you can feel relief despite them appearing to be quite heavily crusted.

As you can see from the pictures these really are larger Roman coins, should prove to be a lot of fun cleaning and attributing.

      Quintus

This hoard is fantastic, it is the best one we have seen in a very long time. Probably since we had the fantastic Jupiter hoard a year or two ago. It has a great mix of larger Roman coins as well as some great looking Greek coins. Even uncleaned a lot of these coins would rate as being in fine condition. Without question this hoard is a true treasure trove, we can only imagine what treasures are to be found in here. Everything in here has a lot of potential value wise and everything in here will be really interesting to clean. A few nice Rings and artefacts can also to be found in this hoard. Most of these coins are either very early, or extremely interesting Greek or Large Roman coins. Many of them have fantastic detail prior to cleaning. There are no small thin coins in this hoard everything in here will prove to be collectable after cleaning.

Also you will see we have taken a picture of some of the crustier coins that are still stuck together in different sizes and clumps. This is a great indication that these coins have been together for a long period of time. These mineralised clumps of coins are often found at the very bottom of a hoard are very collectable in there own right.

Here is a nice and early hoard of larger Roman coins mixed in with some chunky early Greek ones. It is the cheapest hoard like this we have been able to offer in recent years as we managed to negotiate a favourable purchase price on it. There are none of the later Roman small coins in this hoard. It is a nice early hoard of coins!

These kinds of hoards can be very rewarding as they are fairly crusty coins but contain a lot of the rarer earlier Roman and Greek coins. Greek coins are far more sought after than Roman as the upside can generally be a lot higher value wise.

On the Greek side, there appears to be some nice BC coins in here depicted by the ancient Gods that are visible on them. You can see the odd coin with Zeus on, or the fork of Poseidon, as well as Nike and Pegasus, as well as pictures of Crabs and Horses.

On the Roman side I noticed a few large coins on with SC on so these coins are also more likely BC, or maybe just AD.

    13. Naevia

      Naevia

Naevia is a nice 17.5Kg hoard of coins; it is made up from a good selection of early Roman and Greek coins. We are fortunate that this hoard is pretty good in terms of size and weight. It almost exclusively comprises of very large chunky Roman coins that average around 25-30mm, and a mix of ancient Greek coins that are about 15mm in diameter and nice and thick.

Most of the coins seem to be intact with very few chipped or broken ones. The coins offer great prospecting opportunities, as they are such early coins. I would imagine that after cleaning they will turn out to be a variety of early classical Greek and Colonial Roman coins. Some of the Roman coins are marked “SC” or "senatus consulto," or "by the decree of the Senate so are probably colonial or provincial coins.

These large early coins are becoming very hard to get these days, and with a great percentage of Greek coins mixed in, this hoard certainly should prove to be very interesting when cleaned.

      Bali

This is a better than average hoard from Jerusalem as it has a good amount of coins that already have some detail showing. These hoards historically are some of most interesting and varied around. Apart from some interesting coins this hoard has a variety of interesting hoard artefact’s including some Rings and Arrows along with some other curious objects. There also seems to be a few silver coins in here but they are mainly Islamic by the looks of it.

Coin wise it shows some nice Greek, Roman, Seleucid, Islamic and Byzantine that is characteristic for coins that were traded in the centre of the 'ancient world'.

From previous experience these hoards can yield very rare coins that were often traded in the Holyland. The ground conditions in the region are favourable for preservation although it should be noted that some of the coins in the region were in circulation for very long periods of time.
