    1. Moneta (Cleaned)

      Moneta (Cleaned)

This is a large collection of wonderfully cleaned ancient Roman and Byzantine rings. It is not normally the kind of thing we sell, but when we were offered them they were just to nice to pass up.

Most of the rings are made of Bronze with the odd Silver or Pewter ones, they range from being elaborately decorated to some with more simple designs. Some of them are "keyrings" if you ever wondered where the keyring originated from, literally it was an ancient ring with a key on it.

Size wise they really do range, there are some small enough to fit on a child's finger and some large enough for a modern day man. Almost all the rings are complete a few seem to have a split in the actual ring as an ancient design feature to make them adjustable.

These are really fascinating and cleaned to a very nice standard, would make great display pieces. They are a great price considering the great detail on most of them and the fact they have been cleaned very sympathetically.

An interesting 18KG hoard it has a more than average amount of smaller coins in it, but then also some of the largest coins I have ever seen including some Ancient Lead ones that I assume are probably Ptolemy judging by their size.

    5. Venus Hoard

      Venus Hoard

This is a very pleasant and varied Hoard, when I was taking the pictures I was drawn to a few very nice ancient classical Greek coins that were noticeable in it. In terms of composition I would say that it represent a great ancient variety of coins as well as a slightly over average detail on them before cleaning.

      Pandora Hoard

This is a very nice hoard if you love Ptolemy coins, is has a far higher number in it than we would typically see. I would estimate at somewhere around 10% by weight of this hoard is made up from these very collectable and valuable coins.

    7. Hades Byzantine cup coins

      Hades Byzantine cup coins

This is a really interesting hoard made up exclusively of Byzantine cup coins. They date from around 11th century and are very collectable. This shape of coinage was far harder to strike than normal flat coins and was issued up until around the 14th century. These will make for fantastic cleaning and numbers of them are still stuck together in piles where they lay undisturbed until discovery. They offer extremely good value for money and are coins that when cleaned have a good value to them. This hoard is entirely made up of these very interesting yet collectable coins.

    8. Vesta Hoard

      Vesta Hoard

This hoard is mainly made up of later Roman coins, we often get asked for hoards containing mainly Roman coins and this hoard certainly fits the bill on that note. There is a small amount of silver coins visible and a few silvered later Roman coins. I would say that the majority of these coins are around 2-300AD. Compared to other hoards that we have for sale from the middle east they are generally slightly larger Roman Coins on the whole although there are still some tiny coins included in them. You can see the odd other type of coin including Byzantine, and Islamic but I would estimate that well over 90% of these coins are late Roman. Some have visable legend on them, and some have camp gates, and other easily identified Roman characteristics.

    9. Cerberus hoard

      Cerberus hoard

This is not a typical hoard in the sense of the word but a cleaned private collection of painstakingly cleaned Byzantine coins that we took in part exchange from one of our regular customers. He collected them over a number of years and never attributed any of them. In this collection there are fantastic examples of early as well as the later Cup coins, but all the coins here are unattributed. Sizes, ages, and condition are all great, and there are no slugs at all in here so every single coin will be attributable. Some of them have fantastic patinas and each of them is in great condition.

They say variety is the spice of life, well this hoard is great as it is so varied. As a Middle Eastern hoard it gives great variety and opportunities to find Roman Greek, Islamic, Byzantine, as well as Ptolemy, Seleucid, Judean, Nabatean, and widows mites (mentioned in the bible). The reason that it is so varied is that so much of the ancient world traded in this region, as it was technically the centre of the Earth at the time. So exchange of so many currencies in a relatively small area, can lead to some of the very most interesting, rare and valuable finds from a wide range of cultures. There are a few visible silver coins, mainly Islamic, a good proportion of Roman coins, including some provincial and city coins by the looks of it. All in all an exciting range of coins and mixture of sizes across the board, right from tiny Fractional Greek to quite large Byzantine coins.

      Maia

This is one of the most varied Hoards that I have seen in quite some time, it has some noticeable Silver coins in there (mainly Islamic). A higher than average amount of early thicker Roman, and Greek coins. As well as a very pleasing amount of Seleucid and fractional Greeks by the looks of it.

There are some nice visible Widows mites in here, and a great mix of Byzantine and Roman coins. So all in all, a fantastically “varied hoard” with some great prospects to find some very interesting and rare coins. These highly varied hoards are always extremely popular; they offer a vast variety of coins from a major ancient trading region of the world. You really never know what kind of rare or interesting gems that you can find. Often these hoards contain coins with Zeus, Cleopatra, and other legendary figures in them. You know what they say “variety is the spice of life”. These are from a region renowned for some very rare, valuable, and interesting finds so they “ALWAYS” prove to be something a little different.

Here we have a nice Hoard of around 16Kg, found in the Jerusalem area of the Holyland. This area was one of the most historic and heavily traded areas of the world in ancient times. It is steeped in History, and within less than 1000 years was occupied numerous amounts of times leading to one of the most diversified and varied uses of currency anywhere in the world. Unlike today where coins have a relatively short shelf life, in ancient times different coinage from different rulers were still actively used well after they had gone. The result of this means you have the opportunity in hoards like this to find some of the most interesting coinage of ancient times.

As an example it is not unusual to find coins from Alexander the great as he conquered the Persians. Then the Judeans came under the control of the Macedonians. Then Jerusalem fell to the Ptolemaic dynasty under Ptolemy I, in 198 BC. Ptolemy V then lost Jerusalem to the Seleucids. By 63 BC then Pompey the great captured Jerusalem. After then it had a period of Roman, Byzantine, and Persian rule.

All of the above cultures and dynasties are captured in this hoard. Each with their own story to tell, as an example Ptolemy coins are extremely collectable and often have pictures of the Gods on them such as Zeus the father of God’s. It is also not uncommon to find coins with Cleopatra on from this particular area, as well as the very collectable Seleucid coins.

    13. Ares

      Ares

This is a great hoard of around 90+% Ancient Classical Greek coins, with a sprinkle of Roman and Byzantine by the looks of it. Everyone loves Greek classical coins, they are so beautiful, collectable, valuable and generally far more sought after than most other coinage of the time. These are all real nice thick and chunky coins that will be extremely exciting to clean up. Although crusty enough to offer almost a complete surprise of what lies beneath you can see some beautiful classical detail on some of them with Gods, as well as Horses, Pegasus, Griffins, Poseidon, and great looking Eagles. This hoard offers extremely good prospecting opportunities to potentially uncover some rare and exciting coins after being cleaned. As a guess I would say that the majority of them are very early at around 2-300 BC. Also the few noticeable Roman coins in here seem to also be nice early examples generally. I am sure these will be a very rewarding investment of both time and money as you clean them, not to mention the history and mythology coming to life right in your hands. Typically these early coins tend to clean up very well, as the base metal was very high quality to start with.

      Janus

This is a nice hoard 14Kg that we managed to purchase at a good price so it is offered for sale at a really competitive rate. It has some noticeable Islamic silver coins in it as well as a good solid range of Roman, Greek, Byzantine, Judean coins. Some of the coins are quite encrusted so really could be anything once you have cleaned them up.

A fair few of the coins are already showing a fair amount of detail before cleaning and have a nice desert patina. Massive collectable variety of coins here with a few really nice looking ancient Greek coins.
